Let’s walk through Maurice Kennedy’s leadership transformation timeline shall we?
When Black Voices Movement started in summer 2021, we set out to build a national tour to HBCUs, except we had 4, maybeee 5, student contacts. So I got creative and started DM-ing HBCU students on Instagram who had scriptures in their bios. Haha!
Some may call that desperate. I call it faith-in-action!
Maurice, a sophomore at the time, was one of the students I reached out to. Once I got on a call with him and casted vision for young Black leaders being reached with the gospel on his campus, the rest was history!
Here’s how it all went down:
FALL 2021 – Maurice spent the fall months collaborating with me and my team to plan an evangelistic gathering at Morehouse College for our Spring 2022 Black Voices Tour.
SPRING 2022 – he was instrumental gathering 200+ students from Morehouse, Spelman, and Clark Atlanta for an outdoor worship night where 30+ students gave their lives to Jesus! That weekend, Maurice attended our Black Voices Rally in Atlanta, GA where he points to as the moment where he realized he was made for the action of the gospel.
SUMMER 2022 – he attended our 10-day Circuit Rider School where he was trained in practical leadership skills, evangelism, media, and more. Check out his recap here!
FALL 2022 – Maurice began his junior year at Morehouse and started a bible study on campus with a few friends
SPRING 2023 – by the end of the school year that bible study grew from a few friends to a 475+ Jesus community that meets regularly for bible studies, outreaches, and fun!
SUMMER 2023 – he was accepted to an HBCU IN LA film internship where he wrote and directed a short film titled “Soul Ties” that depicts the power of repentance and God’s forgiveness when we fall into sin.
FALL 2023 – that film got an official selection from the Atlanta Technical Film Festival!
Over the past two years, Maurice not only answered his call to lead but has fully come alive in his unique gospel expression through film and the arts! His story is just one of many that showcases the impact of our evangelistic HBCU tours, citywide outreaches, and leadership training schools.
